Remote Backup/Restore
Note: This section is only available in FH Enterprise.
Warning: You must have an understanding of the SQL Server configuration, including a complete and accurate path to the device that will store the backup file, before backing up data.
-
From the Tools menu, select the Backup/Restore option.
Note: If the backup is not available, your remote configuration setting may not be pointing to a valid database.
-
Do one of the following.
Backup- Check Backup To.
-
Press Manage Backup Devices to add a reusable profile of a particular backup device.
Add new backup deviceNote: You must have the complete path relative to the SQL Server database available. Contact your SQL Server database administrator for this information.
-
Press Add Backup Device.
The Add Remote Backup Device form is displayed.
- Type a valid Device Name (no spaces allowed in this field).
-
Type a valid Device Path.
This is the complete path and file name, and must be accurate relative to the SQL Server database.
Example: If the workstation where the SQL Server database runs included a removable drive that you can write to without third-party software mapped as D:, 'D:\' (no quotations) is a valid path (the file name is added automatically).
An alternative approach is to backup to a folder on the workstation, and use a third-party application to back up the contents of the folder. Note that if your only backups are located on a hard drive and your hard drive crashes, you lose access to the backup. - Press OK.
Remove backup devicesWhen you remove a backup device, you do not physically remove the file, so if you remove then add the same backup device (path plus file name) as long as the backup device and file have not been deleted, they will be available. The only way to physically remove a backup device is from the server.
- Press Manage Backup Devices.
- Highlight the backup device to remove.
- Press Remove Backup Device.
-
- Select the backup profile (already selected if you just added).
- Type a name for this backup in Name of Backup.
- Type a brief description for this backup in Description of Backup.
- Press OK to backup remote data.
Restore- Check Restore from to display available backups for specified backup devices.
- Available backups are displayed in Backup to Restore.
- Press OK to backup remote data.
