FHETS Registration for 2010 is Open Now!

Hotel and seminar registration is open for the 2010 FIREHOUSE Software Education and Training Seminar. The deadline for registration is October 11, 2010. But don't wait until the last minute! Anyone registering and paying for FHETS by July 26, 2010 will be entered into a drawing for a free Apple iPad. To register for FHETS, go to http://www.seeuthere.com/fhets2010.

FHETS 2010 will be held Tuesday, November 2nd through Friday, November 5th at The Westin Seattle, in Seattle, Washington. Located in the downtown financial and shopping district, the hotel offers a perfect Northwest escape. We anticipate hundreds of attendees to join us for this year's event.

The seminar price is $745 for the 3-day event. The hotel rooms are available for $139/night, with this special event rate available to our attendees 3 days prior and following the seminar, based on guestroom availability. Breakfast, lunch, and between class snacks will be provided for the attendees during the seminar. You can find the event schedule from the main registration page.

The class schedule is beginning to evolve now. Classes will be structured for FH users, FH administrators and FH IT/network administrative staff. The classes will be covering the current FH desktop application, FH Mobile, FH CAD Monitor, and the start of FH.Net classes. Specific to the FH.Net classes...at this juncture we have plans for three informative classes to be presented on FH.Net. The first class will discuss the preparations necessary for converting from your existing FH desktop application to the .Net application. The second class will be structured for FH Administrators. And the third class will present the functionality in select FH.Net modules.

Watch our webpage at http://www.firehousesoftware.com/FHETS/FHETS_1.php for more information about FHETS planning.  If you have any questions, contact our training coordinator at fhtraining@acs-inc.comWe'll see you in Seattle!

CHECK OUT THE NEW DRAWINGS!
In our last newsletter, we introduced our new add-on component to FIREHOUSE Software, FH Sketch. FH Sketch is an application integrated into the Occupancy module allowing the user to draw, update, and export scenes and plans.

We have been working on videos to help you visualize how FH Sketch works within the current FH Software package. The first of these educational videos are now available for viewing at http://www.firehousesoftware.com/fhsketch.

FH 7.5 Maintenance Release Shipments...Who's left and why update now?
The FH version 7.5 update has been shipped to all clients with active support contracts, with the exception of a small group of departments in Florida and Georgia. Some final client-level NEMSIS testing is required by state EMS directors before mass distribution is permitted.

Some departments will likely be receiving a second shipment of the newest version, FH 7.5.84. This shipment is to address their states' NEMSIS incident reporting changes now incorporated into FIREHOUSE Software. Certain states are mandating clients update to specific versions of FH before they can submit NEMSIS data. Alabama clients must be updated to version 7.5.61 or higher. Virginia and Pennsylvania clients must be updated to 7.5.84 to submit their NEMSIS data. Because of NEMSIS enhancements added to FH beginning with 7.5.50 release and higher, it is highly recommended to update to the latest version of FH 7.5 shipped to your respective department.

Also, any department with an active support contract requesting to evaluate the new FH Sketch component will be shipped the 7.5.84 release. The FH Sketch functionality will be found in the Occupancy module.

Don't forget, the FH 7.5 maintenance release has the January 2009 NFIRS specification cycle rules and code changes included too. If your department does not have an active support contract, or you are unsure of its status, please contact your sales representative about renewing your support contract.

Thinking Differently About FH Software
Over the next few issues of the FH newsletter, we are going to bring you some of the new and interesting ways that specific fire departments and EMS agencies have extended their use of FH beyond the everyday and solved issues using the data they are already collecting.  If you have innovative ways that you are using FH and FH data, write to us at
FHDocumentation@acs-inc.com to become part of this series.

Brad Carico of the Caldwell Fire Department in Caldwell, ID has worked with FIREHOUSE software for quite a few years.  In that time, he's refined the processes within his department to include many auto-tasks and to collect data for many different purposes.  When someone in the department has a data collection need, Brad is able to respond by defining the problem and then creating a solution within FIREHOUSE. In the previous issue, we discussed Brad's use of auto-tasks to e-mail reports to department members and how his department used FH to automate payroll entry. In this issue, we'll discuss another use for FH.

As part of his executive fire officer program at the National Fire Academy, Brad's Chief had completed a paper on providing customer service to the taxpayers of Caldwell. As part of this paper, his Chief had developed a customer satisfaction survey. His Chief asked if the survey could be incorporated into the Firehouse database.  They defined a process so that a survey would be sent to the people involved in any of the department's EMS or fire calls in any given month. The survey's would be printed at the first of the month with an automated task and then mailed out by office staff.  Returned questionnaires are first reviewed by the Chief.  Then, questionnaire data for a call is entered into the NFIRS incident report in the Involvements module using a series of user fields.  For EMS calls, the respondents are entered simply as "EMS customer", so as not to violate HIPPA.

Once the process was established, the fields and rules that allowed the data entry to be done in a timely and secure manner were built and the data entry was started.

Now reports are run each month, as part of the Department's automated monthly statistics report, to include the high, low, and average scores for each customer service category. The comments for the previous month are included to give feedback on the Department's customer service. This monthly report is sent to every member of the Department, through another automated task, so the crews can see what is being said about the service they are providing to customers.  Soon, the department plans to begin a survey program for all prevention division inspections and enter those metrics into FH.

Since the inception of the survey program, the Department has received a lot of positive feedback but the surveys have also helped identify areas that needed addressed. In some cases, the problems involved personnel from the county ambulance district. Often customers think that all personnel are from the same agency.  The use of the questionnaires has enabled the ambulance district to get feedback from Caldwell Fire as the questionnaires are also passed on to them so that any problems can be addressed.

All in all, Brad has configured his system in a way that works for his teams. While you may not have the 300 active automated tasks he does, after you try some of his ideas, the use of these modifications to the basic FH system could provide your group with some of the same efficiency improvements.
